Abstract

Urban regeneration emerged from the unsustainability of fast and unplanned urbanization in Western European countries in 19th Century. Today, on the other hand, urban regeneration projects are applied not only due to justifications like fast and unplanned urbanization but also because of some areas being unable to cover the requirements of modern life and being susceptible to natural disaster risks. In our modern age, the urban regeneration practices that started in developed countries have become a requirement in developing countries for most of the time. In addition to this, urban regeneration is a complex and costly process. For this reason, public and private sector partnerships have emerged as a proper solution in urban regeneration processes. As a developing country, Turkey has been guided to urban regeneration in an intense manner in recent years due to problems brought by fast and unplanned urbanization as well as natural disaster risks. In the case of Turkey, the public and private sector practices have come to the forefront in recent years. Current practices have successful aspects as well as missing points; and a more successful model may be applied by considering these points.
