Abstract

This research study explores the influence of Ubuntu philosophy on African identity within contemporary Africa, employing the theoretical frameworks of Afrocentricity and Ubuntu. By focusing on the perspectives of recent graduates from four prominent higher learning institutions in Nairobi, the study sheds light on the impact of Ubuntu philosophy on individuals' understanding and experience of African identity. The findings of the study underscore the Ubuntu philosophy's emphasis on the interconnectedness and interdependence of all individuals, promoting values such as empathy, compassion, and respect. These values are identified as fundamental for nurturing strong and cohesive communities, facilitating social harmony, and fostering a sense of collective responsibility. Moreover, the study highlights the close association between Ubuntu philosophy and the African Renaissance, an influential movement that seeks to revive and celebrate African culture and values. Ubuntu philosophy, it posits, holds the potential to contribute significantly to the African Renaissance by cultivating a shared identity and a collective purpose among Africans. Consequently, the study recommends that African universities incorporate Ubuntu philosophy into their curricula as a means to enhance students' understanding of social relations and foster Africa's holistic development and renaissance. In conclusion, this study underscores the significance of Ubuntu philosophy in shaping African identity, promoting values crucial for community building, and contributing to the African Renaissance. Integrating Ubuntu philosophy into higher education is essential for nurturing a deeper comprehension of social dynamics and empowering individuals to actively participate in Africa's comprehensive growth and reawakening.
