Abstract

Stroke is a condition that arises due to a bleeding disorder in the brain, which causes the death of brain tissue. If a stroke attacks the left brain and affects the speech center, it is likely that the patient will experience speech disorders or aphasia. One of the non-pharmacological therapies to treat verbal communication disorders is AIUEO vocal therapy, which is used to practice tongue, lip, and word pronunciation movements. This study aims to determine the effect of AIUEO vocal therapy on the verbal communication abilities of non-hemorrhagic stroke patients at RSUD Prof. Dr. Aloei Saboe, Gorontalo City. The research design used was a true experiment for 7 days with AIUEO vocal therapy twice a day. The samples taken were 24 respondents who were being treated at RSUD by Prof. Dr. Aloei Saboe. Before and after AIUEO vocal therapy, respondents were assessed for verbal communication disorders using the FAST (Freenchay Aphasia Screening Test) instrument. The results of the Paired T-Test statistical test obtained a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05). So, it can be concluded that there is an influence of AIUEO vocal therapy on the verbal communication abilities of non-hemorrhagic stroke patients. It is hoped that this research can be used as a non-pharmacological therapy for non-hemorrhagic stroke patients who experience verbal communication disorders and can be used as input in the nursing education process and as a reference in further research.
