Abstract

This research investigates the impact of social media on mental health and well-being, emphasizing both positive and negative effects. However, one area that could see significant development is the impact of social media on mental health and well-being (both positive effects but mainly negatives). Due to the growing integration of social media in our everyday lives and use patterns, it is essential that we learn how its existence affects psychological outcomes. This study will use a thorough review of the literature over the last several years to assess if there is an association between social media usage and key mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and overall well-being. We further explore the role of key factors, including content type, nature of online interactions and individual differences, in addressing these effects. Research suggests that social media may be utilized to have broader positive effects on social connection and support. However, excessive or maladaptive use is related to increased mental health challenges. Media literacy is key as research points to a positive counteractive balance between online/offline activities to moderate an adverse effect. It also advocates for several public health approaches, such as work to encourage healthy social media habits and the creation of more targeted intervention programs around digital well-being. Future research investigating the long-term effects and underlying mechanisms by which social media use impacts mental health is critical.
