Community Eye Care in North East India

Abstract

The Blindness and community eye care services has been one of the top priority area of national health planning. National Programme for Control of Blindness was launched in the year 1976 as a 100% Centrally Sponsored scheme with the goal to reduce the prevalence of blindness from 1.4% to 0.3%. Under this programme various services are being introduced to reach the community through various outreach services. In this regard different NGOs/Hospitals/CBOs and international agencies are taking initiatives to improve the community eye care services in India. This article intends to highlight the community eye care services rendered by of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralays, Guwahati, Assam- an tertiary eye care centre of North East India.
