Abstract

Economic growth and development of a country depends largely on the infrastructure industry, particularly, the steel industry. Rapid technological advancements has brought cut throat competition in domestic as well as global market. In this perspective, an organization has to focus on sustainable differentiating factor for competitive advantage. Competence development of human resources is a key factor for cost and quality control amids the tight market challenges. Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), an Integrated Steel Plant in the country, is flagship unit of SAIL and India's sole producer of rails and heavy steel plates and major producer of structural. At Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), competence development is a continuous process. Human Resource Development Department of BSP ensures that employees have the required competence to achieve strategic goals by maximizing their contribution. In the present study, it is found that effectiveness of competence development programmes gives rise to greater orientation towards learning and development and enhanced organizational profile of learning which are essential for growth of the organization.
